Bring the Forest In

With TIMBER, Marburger Tapetenfabrik has created a collection that brings the natural beauty of the forest directly into our living spaces. Soft shades of green, warm wood tones, and subtle textures transform any wall into a haven of calm. But where does the inspiration for such detail-rich designs come from? We spoke with head designer Felix Diener.

The Inspiration Behind TIMBER: Nature as a Design Template

Felix, be honest: Have you ever crawled through the forest on all fours just to get a better look at the grain of a birch tree?
Felix Diener (laughs): “Never on all fours – but I admit, I’ve taken photos from the strangest angles. The birch trunks in TIMBER are so true to life because we really do study nature closely. I believe you have to feel the forest to truly bring it to the wall.”

If TIMBER had a sound – what would we hear?
Felix Diener: “The soft crackling of twigs underfoot. That quiet, calming sound you only hear in the woods. TIMBER is meant to capture exactly that: calm, serenity, and at the same time, a sense of life. Each design tells its own little story.”

How many wallpaper drafts did you throw out because they looked like a 1970s basement bar?
Felix Diener: “More than I’d like to admit! (laughs) With TIMBER, we wanted to find the balance between authenticity and modernity. We worked on the wood shingle design for a long time until it looked elegant instead of retro. The goal was to make nature tangible – without looking old-fashioned.”

Creative Details: From Dried Flower Stem to Wallpaper

What was the craziest moment during the development of this collection?
Felix Diener: “We actually lined up real dried flower stems side by side and photographed them to create the horizontal stripe design. In the end, we were standing there with tweezers and a magnifying glass, adjusting each stem. Sometimes, the best ideas come when you have patience with the tiniest details.”

Imagine TIMBER were a place. Where would we be?
Felix Diener: “In a sun-drenched clearing in the middle of the forest. It smells of moss, the air is crisp, and the only thing you hear is the wind rustling through the leaves. That’s exactly the feeling we wanted to capture with the warm wood tones and soft greens.”
